AOD is the original American Union Carbon Company, now the United States Praxair utility gas company’s patented technology “argon oxygen decarburization steel process” for short. It is a double-smelting process in which scrap or raw materials are first melted in an electric arc furnace or induction furnace and then decarburized and refined in a specialized AOD furnace. Controlled oxygen and argon are blown into the molten metal through the blow pipe to decarburize and minimize the metal oxides. Deoxidation in the AOD furnace, desulfurization and recovery of the required metal from the slag, low alloy steel, but also dephosphorization.
