Philips Radio Communication Systems, a joint venture between Cambridge University and EB Communications, designed a £ 100,000 communications system to be used in a new 2.5km tunnel in Hong Kong. This system enables drivers traveling through tunnels to receive emergency information broadcasted by police and security agencies using their standard car radio as well as normal radio reception. The system provides information on the traffic conditions in the road as well as warnings of road conditions in front of the road. The system is part of the £ 8 million contract recently handed over to Philips in Hong Kong. The contract includes the longest road tunnel built in Hong Kong to date and a number of computer management systems and a lighting system. This tunnel will connect the two fastest-growing satellite cities in the New Territories (Shatin) to Tsuen Wan by 1989.
