Dear Editor,A major function encoded in plant genome sequences is devoted to defense against pests and pathogens.Among the defenserelated functions in the plant genomes sequenced,there is a group of genes coding for NBS-LRR proteins that have been associated with effector-triggered immunity (Jones and Jones,1997).The majority of genes responsible for race-specific resistance in plants belong to this family.
