A scientist at the University of California Institute of Technology successfully isolated a virus from leafrollworms in the avocado tree in the west. This virus is particularly damaging to the major pests (roller worms) in the pecan orchards in southern California. His achievements mark the first time humans have isolated a virus from leaf-roll worms. Now he is studying the characteristics of this virus. This is just the first step in their long-term research project. The ultimate goal of this research project is to develop the virus as a microbial insecticide against Pelargonida and obtain a special issue through registration. Brain A. Federici, Ph.D., associate professor of entomology at the University of California, Los Angeles, recently reported on the progress of his research to the California-based Avocado Consulting Unit, which supports the research.
