The “master” microbes that repair DNA can teach you many things. Today, a tiny creature from the Dead Sea is telling scientists new knowledge about biotechnology, cancer and the life that might exist on other planets. And this is just the beginning. Called the bacterium Halobacterium hallucobacterium, this microorganism plays an important role in protecting astronauts from high-intensity radiation in their mission to Mars. High-intensity radiation in the solar system penetrates the astronauts’ bodies, destroying the DNA in their cells, causing cancer and other diseases. DNA damage is one of the main causes of cancer on Earth.
