Objective To investigate the clinical significance of plasma E-selectin levels in esophageal cancer patients. Methods Serum E-selectin levels in 23 normal controls, 42 esophageal cancer patients and 23 postoperative patients were detected by quantitative ELISA. Results The plasma levels of E-selectin in esophageal cancer group were significantly higher than those in normal control group (P <0.01). The plasma E-selectin levels in stage I and II group were significantly lower than those in groups III and IV (P <0.01) Plasma E-selectin level in the latter group was significantly lower than that in the corresponding preoperative group (P <0.01). Conclusion The plasma E-selectin level in patients with esophageal cancer is related to the severity of the disease, and can be used as a reference for the observation of curative effect, tumor metastasis and prognosis.
