广州在清朝时期是国内与西方交流最大也是唯一的贸易中心,由于受到当时康熙皇帝的禁海令,命令设置海关对来往的商品贸易进行监督与检查。同时西方传教士为了能够打入中国市场,得到当时高官的认同,遂将西洋钟表作为敲门砖引入了中国,但结果令他们大为欣慰,西洋钟表不仅受到了官员与民众的喜爱,而且连皇帝也颇为感兴趣,这就促使两方钟表大量涌入广州,同时为了迎合皇帝的喜好,广州的钟表行业得以发展起来,它不仅是清朝民间钟表制造的重要中心之一,而且也是国内最早接触西洋钟表的地方。广州钟表行业发展到乾隆时期,不仅具备了相当大的规模,而且也成为我国自主生产钟表的重要基地之一。
