Effect of Age on Thyroid Function The basal oxygen consumption (BMR) and thyroid hormone (T_4) secretion rate gradually decrease with age throughout life. These changes are to maintain the stability of the body’s response to the environment, the overall body metabolism and T 4 degradation in the surrounding tissue is parallel to each other. The concentrations of T_4 and free T_4 were not significantly different in healthy elders compared with young adults, and the BMR was not reduced with age assuming that BMR was expressed per unit cell population. In contrast, triiodothyronine (T_3) gradually decreased with age in the elderly, probably due to the reduction of T_4 to T_3 in the surrounding tissues.
