今有三人焉:一人勇,一人勇怯半,一人怯。有与之①临乎渊谷者,且告之曰:“能跳而越此,谓之勇;不然为怯。”彼勇者耻怯②,必跳而越焉;其勇怯半者与怯者则不能也。又告之曰:“跳而越者与③千金④,不然则否。”彼勇怯半者,奔⑤利,必跳而越焉;其怯者,犹未能也。须臾,顾见猛虎,暴然向逼,则怯者不待告跳,而越之如康庄⑥矣。然则,人岂有勇怯哉?要者以势驱之耳。(选自苏洵《谏论(下)》)
