Some mechanical parts transmit or support loads through small contact areas (sometimes called line contacts). Examples include gear pairs, some bearings, cams or rollers, like wheel / rail or roller / raceway units. Due to the small contact area, such parts withstand high concentrations of stress even at light loads. The Hertz equation is generally used for contact stress design.
