  对青少年来说,交朋友很有必要,但在交朋友时,千万别忘了“近朱者赤,近墨者黑”的古训呀!另外,也应多征求一下父母的意见,毕竟他们是过来的人啦!
Many teenagers feel that the most important people in their lives are their friends. They believe that their family members,in particular their parents, don’t know them as well as their friends. In large families,it is quite common for brothers and sisters to fight with each other and then they can only go to their friends for advice.
It is very important for teenagers to have one good friend or a circle of friends. Even when they are not with their friends, they usually spend a lot of time talking among themselves on the phone, because friends can discuss something difficult to say to their family members. This communication is very important during children’s growing up.
However, parents often try to choose friends for their children. Some parents may even stop their children from meeting their good friends. The question of “choice” is an interesting one. Have you ever thought of the following problems?
Who chooses your friends for you?
Do you choose your friends or your friends choose you?
Have you got a good friend your parents don’t like?
  Notes:
  1. teenager n. 青少年 2. believe v. 相信
  3. fight v. 打仗,打架 4. discuss v. 讨论
  5. communication n. 交际,沟通 6. choose n. 选择
  Answer the following questions.
  1. Who are the most important people in many teenagers’ life?
  2. What does the phrase “a circle of friends” mean in Chinese?
  3. How can teenagers communicate when they don’t stay together with their friends?
  4. Do you think it is good that your parents choose friends for you?
  Key:
