The Human Genome Project will make us tend to interpret “human nature” from the perspective of genetics, and the importance of the environment and, more critically, the lack of awareness of the importance of free will and personal responsibility. However, we can ultimately learn more about individuals and social behaviors from genetics only by excluding cultural, gender and racist biases from scientific investigations. Knowledge of genetics must be used to enhance the value of the individual, to enrich the ways in which human beings live, and to avoid the kind of coercive and genetic diversity that previously existed in ethnological improvement. If this genome project gives us a clearer understanding of our own potential and limitations, we will eventually be able to create genuine human self-esteem that respects the biological heritage and cultural heritage.
