祁东县双家口中奥陶统剖面系湖南省地矿局区调队四分队1974年发现并进行了初步研究,1985年由中国科学院学部委员世界知名的笔石专家穆恩之教授推荐作层型研究。湖南省地矿局区调所刘义仁,傅汉英担负该剖面中双家口组(相当于(氵韩)江阶)和城步组(相当于石口阶)共厚34.85m和其下的百马冲组(相当于胡乐阶)顶部2.5m的详细研究。野外研究中按地层的单位,以50cm×50cm的面积逐层采集岩石,共划分了277层,采集标本总17吨。室内劈取化石达十万余块,其中99%以上为笔石(既有具相当层
