胰岛素的发现和提纯开创了糖尿病治疗的新纪元。但此药必须注射才有效,对病人造成不便和痛苦。所以很早就有人研究口服有效的胰岛素剂型,如将胰岛素与胆汁混合后用膠囊装;制成片剂舌下给药;配成溶液直肠给药;或制成油膏涂擦皮肤等,结果均遭失败。另一方面从植物药和人工合成药中寻求有效的抗糖尿病药也是医药学家的重要课题。我国两千多年前就认识了糖尿病,历代用于治疗糖尿病的药物如人参、地黄等至少有49种。我国科学家在这方面作过一些研究,解放后更加受到重视,现在有些实验室正在这方面进行研究。
