Objective To investigate the expression and the role of costimulatory molecules in cerebrospinal fluid, blood and peripheral nerve tissue of patients with Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS). Methods RT-PCR and in situ hybridization were used to observe the expression of costimulatory molecules B7 1, B7 2, CD2 8 and CTLA 4 in peripheral blood, cerebrospinal fluid and peripheral nerve tissue of GBS patients. Results The expressions of costimulatory molecules CD2 8, B7 1 and B7 2 in peripheral blood, CSF and peripheral nerve tissue in GBS patients were significantly higher than those in control group. The expressions of CD28, B7 1 and B7 2 mRNA in GBS patients Obviously higher than the peripheral blood. Conclusions The expression of costimulatory molecules during the pathogenesis of GBS can activate T cells, leading to humoral and cellular immune responses.
