Musicology David Copeland For more than a century, music has been an important area of anthropological research, especially its relation to other performance activities, including rituals. This article examines the causes of this apparently global phenomenon and its implications for work in the field. The author reviews several turning points in the interdisciplinary development of music anthropology and discusses the intellectual and institutional challenges of balancing the relationship between anthropology and musicology. It also focuses on the involvement of music in what appears to be an independent area of social action. It examines how music shifts from performing anthropology to acting anthropology. It breaks the boundaries of a more comprehensive approach to expression and exchange of ideas in anthropology and provides an in-depth analysis of the potential value of thorough musical anthropology
