在柑桔分类学上,通常把柑和桔加以明确的区分。柑一般指宽皮柑桔类中花比较大(花径3.0厘米以上),春梢叶片先端模糊,果皮海绵层厚,剥皮稍难,种子中胚为淡绿色的种类,如蕉柑、温州蜜柑等;而桔则相反,是指花较小(花径2.5厘米左右或更小)、叶片先端凹口明显,果实海绵层薄,剥皮极易,胚为深绿色的种类,如红桔,朱桔等。椪柑在这些基本性状方面都属于后者,所以是桔。由于椪柑是一个著名的优良品种,历史悠久,分布很广,长期沿用这一名称,似乎也没有更改的必要了。
