在中国大陆1990年代的先锋戏剧实验中,孟京辉被视为无可争辩的代表人物。其主创或与人合作的《思凡》(1992)、《我爱XXX》(1994)、《一个无政府主义者的意外死亡》(1998)、《恋爱的犀牛》(1999)等话剧作品,常常与牟森等的《彼岸》、《零档案》、《与艾滋有关》,林兆华等的《哈姆雷特》、《三姊妹·等待戈多》,黄纪苏和张广天的《切·格瓦拉》等作品一起,被列为先锋戏剧的代表作。在孟京辉作为导演推出的十多部先锋实验戏剧中,能一直长演不衰的是由廖一梅编剧的《恋爱的犀牛》。该剧自1999年夏天在中国青年艺术剧院首演以来,有多达六个不同的演出版本,曾在全世界
