The most successful commercial applications of shape memory alloys are fittings and mechanical fasteners. When these alloys are used as thermo-mechanical coupling elements, it is important that the mounting section should remain austenitic throughout its service life. If they become martensite, the return stress will be reduced to at least the martensitic yield stress, and the shape memory connection will fail. Therefore, in the past, people used a low-temperature alloy (Ms <290K) that maintained an austenitic state at any temperature normally used.
