铁路自1825年诞生以来,以其安全、迅速、经济、风雨无阻的特点为人类社会的进步、人类文明发展、人民生活的方便立下了不可磨灭的功绩。铁路在第二次世界大战期间发展达到一个高峰,但此后公路、飞机的发展,特别是高速公路、飞机本身的高速性使铁路的速度受到严峻挑战;再加上铁路作为轨上交通方式有其不便性,使得铁路受到前所未有的冷遇,铁路发展一度走入低谷,世界各国有不少国家拆掉或封闭了许多铁路。而从60年代至今,随着高速铁路的出现,各种高速列车的发展,速度越来越高,列车大有与飞机一比高低的趋势,铁路开始走出低
