The problems associated with the development of new hypotonic ionic and non-ionic iodine contrast agents are complex and their clinical application is limited by the high cost of these contrast agents. Low-permeability contrast media (LOCM) is a product of years of careful research and development. The changes and benefits that this new technology brings to patients have a close relationship with radiologists, so the pros and cons of their applications should be carefully measured. A History of Development One of the most important historic developments in ionic compounds foreshadows the development of a new LOCM, a water-soluble X-ray contrast agent originally invented by Dr. Swick and a hypotonic non-ionic contrast agent developed by Almén. Just as we should especially thank Dr. Hickey for many of the most basic X-ray observations and the naming of X-rated nouns, we should be particularly grateful
