Over the past few years, the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) has been a hot topic at sea. The system is jointly developed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), relevant United Nations agencies and relevant international organizations and is scheduled to be phased-in and installed on all merchant ships in the world from now until seven years on the 2nd of 1999.
