从内容上看,《西游补》的故事情节并非如《西游记》一般降妖除魔,历尽千辛万苦最终取得真经。《西游补》主要是讲述孙悟空的被鲭鱼精所迷,误入了“青青世界”所做的一个梦。在梦里,悟空的所见、所闻可谓千奇百怪,在古代、现今和未来之间穿越时空,经历的人和事统统反应了对现实社会的不满和讽刺。虽说《西游补》的内容并非《西游记》的后续发展,但隐约处都可以看到原著的影子,可以说《西游补》在内容上虽偏离原著甚远,故事情节颇为离奇古怪,但细微处也能看出作者还是基于西游记的故事基础,展开丰富想象创作的。而《西游补》的主要内容多数还是以故事讽刺当下的用意。
