Currently, urinary β_2-microglobulin (β_2-M) is the most widely used method for the detection of renal tubular damage due to exposure to cadmium. However, it has been reported that β_2-M in urine can degrade when the urine pH drops to about 5.5, thereby affecting the accuracy of the assay. It was also reported that urinary α-microglobulin (α_1-M) and β_2-M were significantly correlated with cadmium exposure. This experiment attempts to demonstrate whether the determination of α 1-M is more effective than measuring β 2-M in detecting renal tubular dysfunction induced by cadmium exposure.
