In January 1980, the U.S. Air Force Space Department completed the initial air-ground communication test of the laser satellite communications system, which is expected to transmit a large amount of information safely and reliably by the end of the 1980s. A two-week series of experiments showed that the laser communication system was capable of capturing and tracking the laser beam at a ground laser station at 9,000 m away from a ground-based laser station carrying a C-135 aircraft circling a laser communications system for up to 50 km. During the 10 10-hour four-hour flights, a ground station laser accurately transmitted a 50-word telegram to the airborne laser communications system, indicating that for the first time an air-to-ground laser communication across the atmosphere was obtained
