An examination of the geography of Africa is a prelude to the division of Africa by the imperialists. Although the European colonialists invaded Africa from the 15th century onward, they did not occupy the coastal zone until the mid-19th century and knew little about the situation in inland Africa. In order to gain more market for raw materials and commodities, the colonialists need to find out the distribution of inland resources in Africa and the traffic routes.
