在我国,音乐美学家们大都认为音乐艺术不属于模仿性为主的艺术,而是属于表情性为主的艺术。他们认为音乐不能够模拟某种形象,而只能表现某种感情。产生这种认识的原因,关键在于音乐所用的感性材料——声音上。音乐是以乐音的有定性、有规则的组合作为表现手段的,这种手段,既抛弃了造型艺术所凭依的感性空间,也否定了造型艺术所用感性材料的静止、并列的物质性,而只是以声音在时间里的运动来表现的。这种表现方式,不可能如造型艺术那样,用可见的色、线、形的组合,在两度空间或三度空间中塑造出某些客观事物的原型,在欣赏对象那里无法见到占有空间的、静止的物质性形状,而只能以听觉通过声音的随生随灭的运动去感知某些观念性的精神活动。
