目前,全世界都在重新考虑汽车在城市中扮演的角色,这也是新世纪交通观念发生的最根本的转变之一。现在,我们需要更少的汽车而不是更多。而城市面临的挑战就是要重新设计交通系统。为此,不同的城市给出的是不同的解决方案。为什么要减少汽车的数量?过多的汽车已成城市生活的毒药。如果说此前汽车带给我们的是流动性,那么现在它带来的是停滞和堵塞,比如,伦敦现在的汽车平均速度几乎与一个世纪前的马车类似。更不用提空气污染和随之而来的健康问题。而对于城市本身来说——有发达城市交通系统与成熟自行车基础设施的国家与那些严重依赖汽车的国家相比,在抵抗全球范围内石油产量衰减的压力方面更具优势。
At present, the world is reconsidering the role that cars play in urban areas. This is also one of the most fundamental changes in the concept of transportation in the new century. Now we need fewer cars than more. The challenge for the city is to redesign the transportation system. To this end, different cities are given different solutions. Why reduce the number of cars? Too many cars have become poisons of urban life. If the cars that used to bring us mobility are now stagnant and clogged, for example, the average car in London is now almost akin to that of a century ago. Not to mention air pollution and ensuing health problems. And for the city itself - countries that have developed urban transport systems and sophisticated bicycle infrastructure are more advantaged in resisting the pressure of declining oil production globally than those that rely heavily on cars.
