历代文章大家都十分强调文章的立意,强调“作文一篇,定有一篇之主脑;主脑非他,即作者立意之本意也”(李渔《闲情偶记》)。他们所说的主脑、意,即现在所说的文章中的中心思想、主题、主题思想、基本观点之类,一般说来,文学作品称主题,一般文章言中心,而应用文书则说主旨。公务文书的主旨,是社会生活的客观反映和作者主观思想相结合的产物,即文章中通过全部材料所表达的中心思想(或主要内容)和作者写作意图的统一。
