Introduction The first Australian airspeed survey was conducted in 1947 by consultant geophysicist Oscar Weiss. Four years later, in 1951, systematic geophysical measurements of aeronautics began at the Geology and Geophysics Agency (BMR), the predecessor of the Australian Geological Survey Organization (AGSO). Since then, government agencies have been developing acquisition plans for aeromagnetic and gamma ray data to assist state and federal governments in their research strategies for resource development and environmental management. Private companies also make aeronautical measurements widely used in the fields of minerals and oil and gas exploration. This article gives a brief overview of the equipment used for early exploration data acquisition and details the current most current applications for aeromagnetic and gamma ray measurements
