The world-famous Windsor, home to the British royal family, was built by William the Great in 1070. It is said that earlier local Saxons hated the foreign invader, William, and often threatened to insurrection. Thus, William the Great built a series of castles around London to protect himself. To the west of London a hundred feet above the riverbed, a castle overlooks the surrounding landscape and serves as a royal residence. Because of its proximity to an Anglo-Saxon community named Windsor Sarah, the British royal family later renamed Windsor Castle. A few and a half miles around Windsor there are some small villages.
