明代北京城是在元代城址上兴建、扩建的,清代沿用。元、明、清皇帝对京城按金、木、水、火、土五行学说,在相应的方位建有五个镇物,即燕墩、景山、永乐大钟、神木、颐和园铜牛。镇物,按封建迷信思想是震慑妖魔鬼怪,避邪,保护平安的物体。永定门脸的燕墩永定门旧址往南一华里,永定门外大街路西31号院内,有一处元代古迹——燕墩,因居僻静之处,保护得较完好且鲜为人知。
The Ming Dynasty Beijing City was constructed and expanded on the site of the Yuan Dynasty and used in the Qing Dynasty.
