Glutamine is known to be a nonessential amino acid, but an essential nutrient in the gut, which stimulates the growth of intestinal mucosa in vivo. The mechanism by which glutamine is not known remains unclear. The authors’ experiments aimed to elucidate the effect of glutamine on epithelial growth factor (EGF) to stimulate intestinal cell proliferation and to clarify that the specific mitosis of EGF is required for glutamine.
