Mexico and East Asia are considered the success stories of the liberalization of the world economy but Mexico’s economy lurks a crisis after its liberalization. Liberalization of trade and increased foreign direct investment are two pillars of the new development model in Mexico. Both have made export-related manufacturing sectors grow more rapidly, but export-unrelated sectors have been slow to grow and linkages between domestic industries have declined. Foreign direct investment is an important tool for integrating Mexico’s economy into the United States and Canada’s economy by reforming Mexico’s industrial structure and making it a foreign production. Mexico’s economic center of gravity also shifted to the northern border areas.
