Aims: This article aims to investigate the long-term alcohol exposure-induced insulin resistance in mouse retinal injury and the possible role of IGF-1. Methods: Forty-eight wild type (WT) mice were selected and alcohol exposure was used to establish animal model. Blood glucose levels were measured with a blood glucose meter. The levels of insulin and IGF-1 were measured by ELISA. The homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance, HOMAIR). The changes of retinal glial cells were observed by immunofluorescence staining. Results: Long-term alcohol exposure caused insulin resistance in mice (P <0.05). After exposure to alcohol, retinal astrocyte injury such as decreased number of astrocytes and GS staining in Müller cells decreased in a dose-dependent manner (P <0.05) . CONCLUSION: Long-term alcohol exposure can induce insulin resistance and retinal glial injury in mice. IGF-1 concentration and insulin resistance index are negatively correlated, suggesting that IGF-1 can be used as a marker of insulin resistance syndrome.
