周湘是我国近代美术史上不应忘却的人物.一则因为他是“上海最早设立美术学校之人”,二则他培养了许多有影响的画家,“学生有刘海粟、王师子、杨清磬、丁慕琴(丁悚)、张眉荪、马始光、陈抱一、张隶光、汪亚尘、丁健行等.”据说徐悲鸿“把他当作老师看待.”关于周湘的生平、简历,史料匮乏,过去很少介绍,有些资料、文献、著作,以讹传讹.最明显的是他本学油画于欧洲都被说成是“上山湾画馆”陶冶出来的洋画家.
