进入21世纪以来,经济全球化以空前的速度和规模持续深入发展,在信息化高新技术的拉动和持续高油价的支撑之下,石油勘探开发技术得到了迅猛发展。石油勘探正在从传统的静态描述向动态定量化、模型化和可视化的方向发展;物探技术向着更高分辨率、更精确成像和更逼近真实油藏的多学科一体化方向发展;测井技术向着全面成像化、阵列化、高度集约化和网络化发展;钻井工程技术向集成化、信息化、自动化、智能化方向发展。石油开发更加注重油藏经营管理和科技进步的协同作用,油藏定量描述、高含水期剩余油精细挖潜、复杂结构井开采、低渗特低渗等难动用石油藏有效开发等技术得到高度重视;采油工程技术从单一技术研究向石油藏、井筒、地面系统优化、综合集成方向发展;地面工程技术向油田生产运行智能化、网络化的方向发展。
