[Objective] To understand the situation of medical sharp injuries during the internship of stomatology students in a certain college, explore the risk factors of sharp injuries and provide a scientific basis for the development of preventive measures for sharp injuries of dental intern trainees. [Method] In April 2013, a retrospective questionnaire survey was conducted on the 2010 grade of oral medicine graduates in the school. [Results] During the 10-month internship, 76.24% of the trainees had sharp injuries; a total of 1 490 times occurred, with a per-capita average of 3.51. The instruments causing sharp injuries followed by syringe needles, enlarged needles and root canal setbacks; the most likely to cause sharp wounds in the face of dental diagnosis and treatment; oral surgeon outbreak caused the most number of sharp injuries. Multiple linear regression models showed that lack of protection knowledge, lack of pre-job training, unskilled operating skills, psychological stress and lack of concentration during operation all contributed to the increase in the number of sharps injuries (β = 1.02,0.77,0.56,0.31, 0.74, P <0.05). [Conclusion] The incidence rate of dental trauma in stomatology trainees is high. Occupational protection education system for stomatology students should be established to reduce the occurrence of sharp injuries.
