From a global perspective, the modern paper industry is not a “small” industry, but a “big” industry. The paper economy, which is based on the paper industry itself and its extended industrial chain, has drawn increasing prominence. In recent years, the global manufacturing and trade center of the paper industry has emerged a new trend of transfer from the developed countries in Europe, the United States and other regions to Asia Pacific, Latin America and other regions. This trend will have a great impact on the paper industry in developing countries. In 2005, the world’s paper and paperboard production was approximately 345 million tons, down 0.4% over 2004. All regions still showed an imbalanced situation. North America, Europe and other markets were weaker and output generally dropped. While the Asia-Pacific region continued to show a relatively high growth momentum, output in China (the mainland) grew 13.13% over 2004. ● In 2005, demand for paper and paperboard in North America and Europe decreased. However, consumption in the Asia Pacific region continued to grow. China (mainland China), the second largest consumer of the world, recorded an increase of 9.03% over 2004. ● No major changes have taken place in the regional pattern of the global paper industry. Europe (mainly Western Europe), North America and Asia Pacific (mainly East Asia) remain the three major centers of the global paper industry. The papermaking market in Europe and North America has basically reached a mature state with the development potential constrained by the market capacity. The Asia-Pacific region is becoming the engine of the global papermaking industry. The impact in Latin America is increasing. The status of Africa in the global papermaking industry remains limited.
