在乾陵司马道东侧,耸立着一块巨形石碑,因其初无一字,故称之为“无字碑”。无字碑并非是初立时的原名称,而是几经变更长期沿袭的约定俗成。据考证,大约在九百年前的北宋元祐年间,陕西转运使游师雄曾主持绘制过一张乾陵图,图中记载了陵前石雕的数量和名称。“无字碑”之名即始于此。但以后直到明前期的咏乾陵诗文都常用“空碑”、“没字碑”来称呼无字碑。明中叶之后,李梦阳作《乾陵歌》,王尚炯作《无字碑题诗》,则直书为“无字碑”。李诗云“九重之城双阙诗,前有无字碑,突兀云霄
