Twenty-six patients with head and neck cancer were selected and their irritant mixed salivary flow rate, lactoferrin, lysozyme, amylase, and albumin levels before radiotherapy, during radiotherapy, and after radiotherapy were analyzed. The results showed that: Amylase content decreased significantly after radiotherapy started, and remained at a low level. After half a year, the content of amylase was lower. The content of salivary lactoferrin, lysozyme, and albumin increased significantly at the early stage of radiotherapy. When the cumulative amount reached 40 Gy, there was a slight increase. When the cumulative amount reached 60 Gy, it increased significantly, and it basically returned to the pre-treatment level after six months. Tip: Changes in salivary flow rate and amylase content are reliable indicators of the degree of impairment of salivary gland function during radiotherapy, and changes in lactoferrin, lysozyme, and albumin are indicators of inflammation associated with radiotherapy.
