近代湖湘史学在中国史学的发展上占有十分重要的地位。魏源高举爱国史学的大旗 ,首开研究当代史、世界史地和鸦片战争后重编元史的新风。其他史家在研治边疆史地、批判封建旧史、理董乡邦文献、革新史体形式等方面也作出了很大的成就。晚清湖湘考据史学的复振也值得我们认真地加以批判总结 The history of modern Hunan historians occupied a very important position in the development of Chinese history.
