The World Bank’s “Global Development Finance 1999” report recently predicted that the global economic growth rate will drop from 1.9% in 1998 to 1.8% in 1999. Regionally, growth in Europe is likely to slow. Several big developing countries such as China, India and Mexico will weather the storm more smoothly. However, several oil-exporting countries in Latin America, the former Soviet Union, the Middle East and Africa will face stagnation or decline in production. The economic growth rate of developing countries and economies in transition in 1999 will drop from 4.8% in 1997 and 1.9% in 1998 to 1.5%, the slowest growth rate since 1982. It is unlikely that global growth will be restored to its previous level until 2001
