在欧洲,平民化这个话题并不新鲜,历史的变迁使昔日不同的社会等级制度消亡,无论是政治生活还是日常生活,处处都可以感受到平民化意识的存在,从城市建设到家居布置各方面都不例外。平民这个词原是相对于贵族、王权等上流社会而言的。所谓贵族气质、绅士风度、骑士精神都是与上层社会联系在一起的。经过历次暴力革命和两次世界大战后的重建以及工业文明的洗礼,欧洲原有的社会结构已经瓦解,旧贵族衰落,中产阶级日渐形成,阶层的概念取代了阶级的概念。平等、尊重、和平、宽容、清雅朴素和自然的价值观深入社会各阶层,平民化的概念已走出了原有阶级差别的阴影并逐步影响社会的许多方面,形成良好的社会秩序。
