Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the developed world. High density lipoprotein (HDL) particles have a protective effect on the heart, and low levels of HDL are associated with cardiovascular disease, so raising HDL levels may have a positive effect. Treatment with recombinant high-density lipoprotein (rHDL) regresses plaque and reshapes the plaque. It has been reported that rHDL can improve glucose uptake and increase insulin levels in patients with type 2 diabetes - encouraging promise for a wide range of uses. The powerful anti-inflammatory effects of rHDL have also been used to reduce the inflammatory response to diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. In addition, since HDL is an inert particle, it can also be used as a drug carrier. This article discusses the information available so far on the treatment of rHDL and looks to its future applications.
