By the middle of 1982, Gaspar Copper Smelter already had a roaster, a reverberatory furnace, two converters (often only one in a state of being refurbished), an anode casting plant and a single-contact roaster And converter flue gas sulfuric acid workshop. This article describes the improvements and achievements made by the plant in order to obtain converter fume with high SO 2 concentration, stable smoke volume and high efficiency sulfuric acid operation. Details of the converter’s operations, sealing of hoods and chimneys, connection between the sulfuric acid plant and the converter, and ways to improve the operation and control of the sulfuric acid plant to accommodate converter smoke volume and flue gas concentration fluctuations.
