γ-microglobulin has developed in recent years as a sensitive indicator of glomerular filtration function. This article describes its history of discovery and evolution of methodology; the diseases caused by gamma-microglobulin genes and their variants; and its protein structure and biological function. The reference range of blood γ-microglobulin in children, adults and the elderly, as well as comparison with serum creatinine in reflecting glomerular filtration rate in healthy and kidney disease conditions are emphatically introduced. It is pointed out that blood γ-microglobulin Detection of early glomerular filtration function more sensitive than serum creatinine, especially for children and the elderly have good prospects.
