The solid-state imaging sensor used by 625-line TV cameras has been improved with a novel assistive technology. The sensor’s “line-shift” architecture uses a conductance bus to shift the optoelectronic information in parallel in the vertical direction. Then, this information is fetched by the CCD output register. A special feature of this structure is its ability to separate useful signals from parasitic signals (such as dispersion) through a double-readout of vertical bus lines. A good dual-readout architecture requires a special design. Before reviewing the double readout, the design is introduced first. Then the bus readout mechanism and its transfer efficiency and the key parameters for the main optoelectronic characteristics are analyzed. Finally, the experimental results are given and the importance of this sensor structure is demonstrated.
