革末革曷族祖源于肃慎,南北朝时发展演变为七个大的部落,粟末革末革曷即为七部之一。中唐时期,出身于粟末革末革曷的大祚荣创建了渤海王国。由于渤海王国所处的特殊地理位置,以及在历史变迁中涉及中国与周边国家的特殊关系,使其在国际史学界中长期受到重视。因此,研究、考证粟末革末革曷的形成、发展、演变史及其与中央王朝的关系,对于我们正确认识渤海王国的渊源,分清革末革曷民族与高句丽民族的界线等等,均具有重要的学术意义。
