Objective To investigate the effect of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia on hearing. Methods The brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) were detected in 44 neonates with hyperbilirubinemia and 32 neonates with healthy jaundice were selected as the control group. Results The abnormal BAEP rate in 44 neonates with hyperbilirubinemia was significantly higher than that in the control group (65.9%). The higher the bilirubin level, the higher the abnormal BAEP rate. 29 cases of abnormal BAEP children were followed up for most of the follow-up review. Conclusions Hyperbilirubinemia can lead to hearing loss in newborns. Newer infants with hyperbilirubinemia should be treated with BAEP early. If early positive intervention is given, hearing loss can return to normal.
